Steam is like a tumor, is rooted to the core of the operating system by placing top priority on safety, making changes beyond the administrative permissions, reminds me of the starforce protection system, which had the beautiful custom of burning the optical drives.
even so consume significant resources, hopefully with this next patch will improve game performance substantially that I'm going to need desperately as I am forced to endure this parasite eating up my pc.

Oh yeah, let me just pony up $100+ out of thin air to replace my internal HDD with a much smaller capacity SSD just to play one game because of Steam. Thanks Steam!

(not that this is a problem I'm currently faced with, but you should get that SSDs aren't like over-the-counter medicine everyone can buy...)

Honestly not happy about being forced to use Steam.

Current system AND Steam_ That would be fantastic. No reason for anyone to have trouble with that, but being forced to download yet another third-party service and the game is going to be missing some core content for awhile_ I was just getting back into Hawken and now I think I'm going to HAVE to take another break after less than a month.
If having to run both at the same time causes the already poor performance on my machine to get worse I'm likely going to have to abandon the game, which I really hope doesn't happen. I can only see this as good if the performance is better, but an extra 30-40k processing for Steam going on in the background doesn't give me hope. It's hard enough as is with nothing other than the Hawken launcher running in the background WITH gpu optimizations just to get an average of 30-40 fps.

ive never honestly used steam until i got civ 5 last week tho ive heard about it plenty over the years ever since the orange box
as to those who talk about system resources i see about 45mb of ram and 0.5%-1% of my quad core i5 4440 3.1ghz in use for steam, (which if i was using my old dual core 3.86ghzish 3gb ram or my even older uni core pentium 4 2gb ram would have been a HUGE drain)
i doubt my friend is gunna be able to play anymore thanks to steam since he has bad FPS as it is

Now whenever I want to play Hawken I'm going to be bombarded by Steam ads. Ads that aren't even Hawken-relevant. Fun times.

That's a pretty big conclusion to jump to when A, steam ads don't bombard you by any means and B, the game isn't even available on steam yet.

You can disable Steam ads in your account preferences so they never show up.

Well worth the upgrade. It will make Hawken run a lot smoother too. A whole lot less stuttering. You could get a brand new 120GB SATA III for about $70-80.

About Steam I don't mind it because I got use to using it. I started to build quite game collection on my steam account for dirt cheap. Humble Bundles and Steam Sales.

furthermore i highly recommend iobits razer game booster program!!  its gunna use about 15mb of ram but it will optimize settings in any sort of customization you choose including shutting down explorer.exe when you launch a game AND relaunching it when your done (if you want to or if u want explorer up when your gaming you can do that to) thats 50mb of ram saved at LEAST, it will also temporarily shutdown other processes and/or services (like print spooler networking >.<) when you launch a game saving you additional system resources
it defrags your ram for you everytime you launch a game too
you can have it search to see if there are any drivers or other software you need
gives you a nice and simple FPS meter in the VERY top left corner of your screen
few other neat tricks too

You get an ad when you first start up Steam and that's it, usually that ad is just telling you what the current deals are or what the latest big name title to be released.

I'm logged into Steam 24/7 for the most part. If my PC or laptop is on then I'm on Steam. The only time I see an ad (as in only one pop up) is when I restart Steam or an update or I'm just signing in after having my system shut down. I've never had a game minimize due to a pop up from Steam or anything like that.

A bonus for me with having Hawken on Steam is now Steam won't start updating another game in the middle of a match because it will know I'm signed in. Also having Steam automatically patch Hawken for me will be nice and will be a great way to know how patching is progressing too. I use Steam's auto update to let me know when new additions to games have released like the new episodes in the Walking Dead game.

Not everyone can just drop money on an SSD immediately, nor will they want to just for 1 single game. SSDs also have marginal performance effects besides shortened boot-up times and file accessing/moving. They're great for starting things up fast, but it's going to do very little for something that performance relies mainly on GPU and CPU processing power.

Maybe the only way than the devs could aleviate the currectly unhappyness of a sectors of the players, included myself is than adhesive have the courtesy to confirm if Hawken will be DRM-Free on Steam, theres a list of DRM-Free games on steam and are the follows, from the steam wiki.

http://steam.wikia.c..._DRM-free_games

¿Hawken will be DRM-Free_, that's is the million dollar question.

If a developer respond to our concerns or this message will be greatly, seriously greatly appreciated.

I'll like the game, played since the start of open beta, but ill have the bad experience of DRM, in that case Lock on modern air combat, Starforce protection, the thing ruined my CD DRIVE many years ago in a old build and to be honest, the invasive DRM is the worst of the worst, certainly the steam DRM accord in some sources is not invasive, but still have my doubts.

Waiting from an Hawken developer response.

If a single person can find a single instance of Steam legitimately reducing FPS, I would be appreciative. I have never heard of such a thing. Steam is literally built to have as little of a performance footprint as possible when playing games. It would not have grown to be the single largest PC gaming platform period if there was any performance problems that came along with it. Don't like the overlay_ You can turn it off, even on a game by game basis. Don't like hearing about other games_ You can set Steam to only show your game library, and you never have to hear about how Risk of Rain is on sale, and can even turn off sale notifications. Don't want Steam to update Hawken automatically_ You can set it to not update until you explicitly tell it to.

Of all the hundreds of programs that are running on your computer in the background, I guarantee you, it will not be Steam that causes a performance issue. If Steam is what breaks the camels back for you, I am frankly impressed that you got Hawken running on your PC, and you deserve a hand shake for that feat alone.

I also see a lot of people saying they hate Steam for reasons other than how it kicked your puppy. But then never elaborate why - a lot of people disliked Steam when it was first introduced back in 2004, because it was bloated and slow and annoying. Thankfully, 10 years later, those problems have been resolved, and Steam has grown to a user base of 70+ million people for a damn good reason. I understand disliking change, and I agree that it would be better if it weren't a dead requirement to use Steam, and you had the choice between the two, but Steam does not in any way, shape, or form, represent a security, performance, or existential threat to you, your computer, or your loved ones. You do not need an SSD to run Steam. Maybe it'd be nice to run a game, but your hard drive won't be the determining factor of whether or not Steam causes you problems.

DRM: The DRM you will find on Steam is the same DRM you find now. They will not put SecurROM, Origin, Starforce, or anything else like that, purely by virtue of being on Steam. Any DRM present on a game available through Steam is put there purely at the discretion of the game maker, and will be present whether or not you purchase that game through Steam. There will be no new DRM, unless anything you see in the current build of Hawken would constitute what you call DRM. Meteor and Adhesive have exactly no reason to implement DRM on their game that wouldn't have already been present beforehand. Also: DRM is for games you buy. You do not buy Hawken: it is free. There is nothing to protect with DRM.

At idle Steam is using... 12 megs of RAM on my computer.

With the Library open it's using... 16 megs.

With the Library and a chat window open it's using... 26 megs.

If 26 fewer megs of available RAM causes performance issues on your computer you have problems other than Steam.
