Have there been any specifics on what will be configurable? if i were to buy this, I personally would like to be able to change things like removing the tech, adding health to mechs, increasing splash range of tows, etc.
I'd also like a way to maybe change the loading screen to link to a forum post for feedback, or just to say who is providing the server.
As well, being able to get player stats from the server would be nice for a custom leader board, or for personalized server balancing of mech stats.
Honestly, this splash damage of tows stuff and is engine-level configuration. It would require a completely separate level of mods that would have to be reviewed and approved by the devs.
The thing about mods of yesteryear is that they ran on private servers that did not depend on developer support and were individually hosted, maintained and moderated. This is not easily implementable because Hawken is a) Free To Play b) Developer maintained and c) dependent on multiple separate server systems that validate accounts and account content. While the new devs may very well decide that this is a direction that they want to pursue, it is unlikely to happen, even on a year timescale because of the infrastructure that would have to be set up to support it.
Mech health you can sort-of mess with currently by messing around with current friendly fire settings but anything permanent is again an engine-level mod and not immediately viable.
I don't know enough about how the servers and back-end interact to judge how banning the tech would work, but it should be technically easier than banning internals/items.
Message of the day stuff on the other hand should be easily configurable. Unless I miss my guess there are extant system that could be conceivably re-purposed to display those things. You see it used from time to time to make game-wide announcements. There should be a way to port that to be individual server-only.
