For weeks now I've been getting a lot of complaints about "skipping frames" or having choppy movement so I decided to run Pingplotter.

Are there any obvious culprits judging by my results? For the record, there hasn't been any significant changes to my home internet like new ISP

or new devices on the network, but the complaints have only come around recently.

At the moment I really have no way of getting a wired connection to my computer so I use this shitty USB wifi adapter.

also sorry for just linking to imgur   whenever I try to use the built-in image function it prevents me from posting.

Yeah, those spikes up to 250 ms in the bottom graph is where you have bad lag. From the looks of it, they originate at the first hop (your router), so that's probably your problem.

Does that mean I just have to get a better router or do I need to go in and tweak some settings?

I would start with that wifi adapter before buying a new router. Linksys for $30-40 will get you a much better one than what you are currently using it seems.

Hey ReversusRed, if you don't mind me asking. How are you connected to your router, wired or wireless? Also does this kind of ping only occur with Hawken or any game? I don't want you wasting money if you don't have to, because if it only happens with hawken. Then there's more going on here than just his router.

I'm probably going to upgrade it soon. The $10 one was just a means of trimming costs on a PC build.

I'm connected over wireless. Hard to say whether the problem is universal or just in Hawken because I don't play other online games frequently, but I'm guessing it's universal. For the record my current router is a Sagecom F@st 5260. It's just the one our ISP gave us.

Tbh though, I don't think a router upgrade is feasible. I'm the only gamer in the house and I'm only staying for a few more months. Our connection works well enough for any other basic internet task.

That's exactly what I thought, I'm in the same boat. I use wireless connection for my desktop pc(the one I'm using right now) and my ping used to sky rocket on this game to 150ping+. Even though my bars are usually at 4 to 5, it would sometimes still slow down my speed overall and spike me. What I recommend doing is getting a wifi extender, I bought one myself and my bars are at 5/5 24/7 now and I'm using my max internet speed even though I'm away from my router. All a extender does is as it's name says, it increases the signal strength of your wifi in usual deadzone or areas where your not 5/5 bars. They're actually pretty cheap too, mine cost me $20 and my ping is now at 60 on here even though I'm connecting all over the place(east coast) and I'm not getting anymore lag spikes. That may or may not fix your issue but it's definitely worth looking into for us wifi desktop guys/girls. Btw my router was given by my isp also (verizon) and I've had it for over 8 years now, it's nothing new. It's a Ultraline series 3 modem 9300. My internet is 15u/15d. Frontier bought out verizon here.

I've heard that wifi range extenders (often called "repeaters") can add lag to your internet connection, since the repeater needs to receive and re-transmit the signal, and that adds another hop into your connection. It makes sense to me, but I could be wrong.

If someone's in a position where they have to use a wifi range extender, I would instead recommend that they look to an ethernet to AC converter. I've seen some reviews that say that the latency across this connection type is lower than by using wifi, let alone using wifi plus a repeater.

Personally, I hate using wifi. Too many dropped connections and lag bursts. I'd take a wired connection - even if it's across the 120V wiring in my house - over using wifi even if the wifi is a room away.

Good choice Satisfier, I'm all for anything that helps out us wireless foaks. Since obviously your connection will be perfect if you connect wired. I recently got the wifi extender because fam wanted to watch netflix and stuff like that and I'm hearing what feed back there giving me. If everything is all good, connection speed wise than, we're all set but I have heard your speed might get reduced, so I tested my speed and ping and all are good for me. I'm using max speed of 15 but I know everybody isn't the same. It's worth knowing that you should buy all these things and test them yourselves via Amazon, remember you can return the items within 30 days with minimum excuse for a refund. That's what I'm doing and I'll be checking out the items Satisfier linked as well if the extender doesn't help the fam enough. Unfortunately and fortunately I'm moving in 2months so I may not need any of this stuff at the new spot, I'm using wireless here because my room doesn't have a Ethernet port.

A quick update for everybody, I just bought this for my B-day and I'll be testing it come Tuesday. I'll tell you how it runs, it's not too expensive but apparently it turns your plug outlet into a Ethernet port, equivalent to connecting to your router directly, so here's hoping it does. https://www.amazon.c...CH4M?th=1&psc=1

I don't play over one of those links, but I have one in my house connecting downstairs wifi (5GHz) to the switch.

I have a 10GE switch isolating subnets and only one WAN uplink to the router (the router only converts lan-wan FIOS, no other function).

My gaming PC is on it's own port of the switch.

I have 20ms ping to the 'Dallas' servers.

No, no, NO wifi for gaming. Ever.
You did not elaborate on why you can't get a wired connection, (unless I missed it) but let me know if I can help.

Let me know how long of a run you have and I will mail you a piece of cat5e, with fittings.

Except for occasional issues of lag and rubberbanding, I haven't really had major problems when playing. My pings would fluctuate depending on the server location and region I would play in (NA- 50-90), but until several weeks ago, I've never had the problems I am now experiencing.

My frame rates have always been good, usually averaging 100+ fps, even during intense periods during game times ...but until recently I'm now getting ingame rates that will fluctuate wildly from 100 fps down to frame rates in the teens during these intense periods of gaming.

I've updates to the most recent gpu drivers, have uninstalled, then reinstalled the game to no avail. I still have extreme fluctuations in fps that I have never had before.

I'm not having these same issues in other games, online or not, so I wonder if this is an issue on my end or on Reloaded's end ? The game has become almost unplayable for me at intense gaming moments, which is much of the time In Hawken....

At this point I can't figure out where this problem stems from so I can get this corrected...sad, at this point, cant play the game

PingPlotter running during Hawken session....would this have anything to due with a huge fluctuation in frame rates ?

DieselCat,

First of all, type stat unit in the console in-game, play a bit and see which parameter throttles your fps. It can be either CPU or GPU.

Occasionally unavoidable, though I agree avoid at all lengths. Sometimes the fire marshal or landlord responsible to the fire marshal isn't okay with a long length of wire running in and out of random windows or down the hallway.

My parents recently moved to a different state so I'm staying at my uncle and aunt's home while I finish high school. he powerline adapter you linked will perform far faster than wifi, tests shown it to be 0 ms jhigh bandwidth wifi on other hand is very bloated with security and popular radio frequency interfering in its range  (ping something on wifi and then on powerline and see wifi 2-5-8 ms turn into 0 ms

Ons here, so here's an update on my power line purchase(thanks Amazon prime for the quick delivery), EVERYBODY THAT CAN'T CONNECT TO YOUR ROUTER DIRECTLY, GET THIS ITEM!!!!!

I'm connected to my router now though a regular plug in the wall and my speed jumped to max 15/15 period, no loss of any connection/nothing. I'm literally connected to my router, my brother speed jumped up as well since now we don't have a wifi connection bogging us down, so he's happily running a crap ton of things now without interfering with me or anybody else for that matter. This item is by far the best purchase I made in quite some time, I can't express how happy I am right now. I'm currently testing as much stuff as I can and will leave back any bad feedback I find. The installation was literally plug in device to a wall, plug Ethernet cable to router/device, take the other device and do the same but instead plug it into your Ethernet jack(no router), then press 1 button on both devices to pair..done, so that's pretty awesome. If I don't reply with such feed back then you know it's all good. Again this is what I'm using right now, below:

Looks like I got an ethernet controller driver issue that isn't allowing this to work for me. I've used wifi for so long I never noticed an issue. Not sure if anyone knows how to update. Got a little frustrating trying to figure out, so I needed to play some Hawken. This is the hardware info. I'm currently running win 10 x64. TY!

Are you trying to plug in an old Realtek AT-2500TX v2 PCI card circa 1999?  A 8129 chipset is pretty freaking ancient so Windoze 10 shouldn't have any issue with finding an old driver for it.  Does the device manager report an error with the device or what? (yellow triangle and exclamation point)  What exactly isn't working?  You haven't really said, so it makes troubleshooting pretty hard and just random guesses.

Common issues I've experienced are incorrect patch cord (crossed over instead of passthrough).

No link lights when cable is plugged in, meaning bad cable or wrong cable (crossed over).

Device disabled in network devices (or on laptops it could be a switch on the side or a FN + key command).

DHCP not turned on a network where DHCP is needed.  (or no manual IP set in a non DHCP system)

So yeah, first make sure device manager is reporting no errors and if it is download a driver from realtek.com, second make sure theres a link light when you plug it into a valid network, like either directly to the router or another working hub/switch.  That will eliminate the cable.  Then if you can plug the computer directly into the router to get everything to function before you try inserting those wallwart bridge dealys into the chain.  That way you can at least pinpoint where the failure is happening.

I will look into. I'm getting the yellow triangle on the Ethernet controller in device manager. I'm getting green light where I plug the cord into my comp and it's green where I plug into powerline adapter. My adapters are synced. Regarding realtek, I was having trouble being certain of the download. Win 97 even though I'm running 10? Thanks for help, I'm better at breaking computers than getting them to work.

K, drivers are borked for some reason then. Is this an old addon card, or built into the motherboard? You really need the part number of the card or motherboard to help find the correct driver.
I'm not sure why your motherboard would be using an 8129 chipset unless its pretty old.  The 8129's weren't even gigabit rated, only 10/100 capable.  Maybe windows isn't detecting it correctly, and its a 8139, or 8169 instead.

Check the bios settings and make sure its enabled, and if you can get any device id or vendor id's from a bios screen or post.  Hit esc or tab to clear that splash screen and see what it is detecting, you have to hit pause before you see the windows starting logo, enter will continue from there.

I'm getting green light where I plug the cord into my comp and it's green where I plug into powerline adapter.

Well, that means the cable is completing a circuit so thats good.

My adapters are synced.

Well its just good troubleshooting practice to use the shortest paths possible and then expand from there to eliminate any breaks in the chain.

Regarding realtek, I was having trouble being certain of the download. Win 97 even though I'm running 10?

I think you meant Win 7, and I'd say no. I'd look for 8.1 drivers if you can't find them for 10. Forcing earlier ones than 8.1 will certainly cause some unstableness.

Realtek doesn't list any useful drivers for a 8129, you might try the 8139 package, or a 8169 package and hope that all the sudden it starts working.

I also wouldn't download any drivers from anyplace BUT realtek or gigabyte, unless you like playing with trojans and viruses.

Here you go buddy, find your motherboard and hit the support tab, download the LAN drivers in the LAN tab, done, you don't need the pci because I also have the same triangle on mine and I'm still connected. http://www.gigabyte.us/Motherboard

If you need any further help just let me know, I have a gigabyte motherboard also. Sorry I didn't mention that before but you will need to get your LAN drivers that support your motherboard, I thought I was the only one who didn't have them installed, my bad.

I work in the industry, and I had heard about broadband over power lines (BPL) many years ago. The first thing that ran through my mind was, "How can that work? Power lines are so stinking noisy!"
Eventually, the industry agreed that it was impractical for many reasons, (noise, attenuation, et al).
I'm so happy that the technology has finally been put to practical use.
Over a short distance, why not?
This is awesome. I hope rex can pick up one of these.

TY!

PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8129&SUBSYS_812911EC&REV_01
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8129&SUBSYS_812911EC
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8129&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8129&CC_0200

http://pcidatabase.com/ Appears to not work very well anymore. This is the PCI lookup I used when working generic college tech support but you will want to find a new one. Below is still correct.

10EC is vendor, 8129 is device

Or MBAM + SAS and YOLO (pull your product key and backup first just in case). Assuming you keep your fuzzy bunny backed up as is and can easily reinstall I'd risk it.

I've got a GA-P35-DS3L board. Unsure if it is rev 1 or 2.. I'm assuming 1. This rig is almost 10 years old at this point. It's a quad core so it's held up. My buddy slapped it together for me and has treated me well over the years.

So this is what I got to. I'm assuming I have the rev. 1  motherboard. Lan driver download plus a utility, GREAT. I download the win 7 x64 version as they don't have 10 x64, extract and nothing. I go into the downloads folder and click on the files and I can't get it to work. I am the man when it comes to chicken tits but my skills wane when I go digital. Maybe wrong version of windows?

I don't think this system is sending any info through the wiring (although they do exist).  This has MIMO and beamforming so that would indicate its a RF (radio frequency) link between the two devices.  If it was using the wires it wouldn't need to be synced.

Well, realtek themselves don't list a driver for an 8129.

Well, the files gigabyte are serving don't have a 8129 listed in the catalog (.inf file), so those are not going to work.  I have a few realtek chip cards laying around but they are all 8139's.  Whats odd is they are even older than yours, so something makes me think that MB is just weird, and maybe its not really a 8129 and it might be counterfeit.

I'd go into device manager and delete the network card and if it asks you to delete files say yes and then reboot and hope it detects it, if that doesn't work and you have an open PCI slot just go buy a new (name brand) NIC that says it supports win10, it should onlly cost you like 10 bucks.  I know it sucks but I'm not sure what else you can do since realtek themselves doesn't have a package for that device id.

I'm curious if you looked on the board and located the realtek chip what number it actually has printed on it.  If it was genuine you can't miss it cause its a little quad flat package with a pixely crab like their logo on it.  Should be about 1/2 an inch by 3/4's of an inch, maybe slightly smaller.

I'll take a look when I get home. Thanks for your help. $10 part to fix this at this point is peanuts.

Hmmmm. RF can very well be sent over electrical wiring (and twisted pair, and coax...). In this case, I am quite sure that is what is happening. It is essentially using the electrical wiring within a dwelling as networking cable.

As for the beamforming, I am inclined to believe it is for the pairing of the units, and something akin to a "heartbeat"...but I am not clear on this aspect.
