Do the kids have a design element indicating them as Georges, though? I mean, the turret shields are kind of an inherent element of a c-class body.
As much of an inherent design element as every mech having two arms, two legs, and two guns - yet many manage to have unique abilities that enhance aspects of their gameplay.
I get that the turret shields are supposed to serve a functional purpose, but as you said, they were able to design other C-class mech abilities to use those shields without settling for another turret mode ability.
Though i don't mind having more than one turret mech, it's like how there's more than one mech with a damage reduction ability (bruiser and civ) and and more than one with a damage boosting ability (berserker and sharpshooter).
I concur with you to a degree. While many of Hawken's abilities share some crossover with one another, I think there's two reasons why turret mode stands apart from the other abilities in this context.
First, turret mode stands apart from other abilities in how it restricts the players that use it. Almost every ability in Hawken adds a pure bonus to some characteristic or attribute of a mech, with one of the sole exceptions to this rule being turret mode. Most abilities are either "pew straighter" or "pew harder" or "receive less pew" or "here run some more", but turret mode is "sit down, don't move, no side boosting, no jumping, have some greater armor in this direction, perhaps have less armor in this direction, maybe you get some health regen, and wear this sign to receive free EMPs". To me, that's bad design. Reloaded hasn't done enough with any turret mode variant to make it a worthwhile ability to use with the same frequency that other "positive-only" abilities are used. And, despite this fact, Reloaded decided to swap a non-turret mode ability on the Grenadier with another turret mode ability. This brings me to my next point.
Even if there are are mechs in Hawken with abilities that have similar effects, they aren't as numerous as C-class mechs with turret mode. Off the top of my head, the Brawler, Vanguard, Rocketeer, 36M, and Grenadier all use turret mode. I can't think of three separate mech classes that share a similar ability, let alone five.
That's why I think the turret mode is egregious in both its design and how many mechs its been applied to.
