I was wondering if it is too far fetched to have a type of pilot you can select for your mechs. Confers bonuses and such, has to be unlocked or earned in some way.

Nothing major for the bonuses, maybe +1% movement speed coupled with -1% fuel generation or something like this.

Or with a specific pilot installed you get unlimited holo taunts.

I'd pick the Scout pilot and exploit his strengths and avoid his weaknesses.

There are no OP mechs, only OP pilots.  Pilots pick a mech they can be OP in.  Now I can pick a skill-tree enhancer?

if you don't have credits to buy holos, you should start from this xD

i think idea was good if i can buy some sexy ladies. and if you put fat pilot in scout, will it be -1% speed and +1% fuel generation? :D i also need one mustache pilot.

Since I play Mechwarrior Onlie too, I would like to show that MWO bonus system is very nice and balanced.

All bonuses are very small (like +1% to torso twist, -10% to breaking distance). Additionally you get your main account experience and can buy specific weapon range/reload buffs or special abilitites (seismic sensor pinpointing mech location on mech moves on your radar is pretty sweet).

You get a coule skills to unlock at 3 tiers of mech mastery: basic, advanced and elite - mech specific. In order to get it to elite you need to get 3 mechs of same chassis unlocked at basic or advanced. It takes a lot of time, so as a casual it took me a year to fully develop a community warfare 4-Clan, 250-tonnes lance, fully upgraded. It was very rewarding to watch it grow.

Hawken has internals and items you can put on any mech + pilot and mech progression with no specific rewards. Giving each mech a 1 mech slot + 1 pilot slot would be interesting. It would surely make new players more keen on sticking around with some prize at  the horizon, specifically for pilot lvl 30 and lvl 6 mech. But the bonuses should be some fairly basic buffs.

+ An idea how to make it actually work and help balancing issues:

Give each new player a temporary skill for dmg reduction when receiving damage from lvl 30 players. The bonus scales down as the player progresses, until unlock at lvl 30 with several active skills to choose from + mech specific unlocks at lvl 6?

Keep in mind making a change of the skill kind of a fuss, thus making changes in match impossible (hourly cooldown?).

Blocking using certain skills on certain mechs for balancing purposes would be interesting too (no speed buff for A class, no armor buff for C class?).

So... How about at least a dedicated testing server where the abovementioned handicap for lvl 30 players is in order?

On AWOL from Hawken until -deadline undisclosed-.

If you happen to play Mechwarrior Online and would like to hook up, you are welcome to find me there. Cheers.

No. The one unique factor separating hawken is You are inside the twitch-mech as pilot, thus the 1st person HUD viewpoint.

You know, it would honestly make more sense to me if the mechs were 'remote piloted'.  Most of them have no window and the front of the mech doesn't match the stuff in the "cockpit view" anyhow.  I've always assumed I'm looking through a camera with a VR overlay.  It explains how my mech can be destroyed, but "I" remain alive to spawn a new mech and get back into the battle.  Also explains how a person can survive the huge drops, immediate 180° spins, and high velocity strafing without getting all banged up and losing consciousness.

I know that idea is contradicted by some of the built in lore, pictures and text... but I think it makes more sense.

I would much rather see some sort of 'favored pilot bonuses' that do not directly affect gameplay, but give you an edge on time invested. Stuff like XP gain (which will hopefully become more of a need in upcoming console updates) bonuses are something I would like to see. It makes more sense from a story perspective. Your mech piloting skills don't magically increase the amount of damage you do. This is Hawken, not Fantastic Mechs and How To Find Them.

Just because this is the Hawken forum, I'll argue that "your mech piloting skills DO increase the amount of damage you do." If you are a better pilot, then you will land more of your shots and do more damage. :P

But wouldn't a system that allows to either random drops or something extra being added onto the mechs add for more play time? Mostly that is why I put this up there. I wouldn't be against putting 2 pilots in a heavy mech per say either if there was a cap per team of 2 ish of them.

2 pilots? Google "who's on first?"
Of course, if you had pilot + weps officer arrangement like 2-seated fighter-bombers that could be a game changer

Nice.
Did you ever play "Starhawk" on PS3? It had the absolute coolest spawning system in the world. (and just happened to be the coolest game I'd ever played... and was my obsession before Hawken, until the servers went offline.)

well, you know that when you unlock advanced and elite rank all parameters is doubled? and the mech in total got very high advantage, + added here engine and armor, which allow you bring more weapons and have x2 higher DPS and alphastrike attack. + modules which give you insane abilities like wall hack, or target gathering which totally destroy radar system and allow you got info about mechs much faster. At the same time, only 4-5 modules actually useful, 90% all modules waste of C-bills and not give you nothing, so, all MWO players also use 1-2 the same builds on almost any mech =)

Give each new player a temporary skill for dmg reduction when receiving damage from lvl 30 players. The bonus scales down as the player progresses, until unlock at lvl 30 with several active skills to choose from + mech specific unlocks at lvl 6?
1) first of all - for the sake of what?
2) second - smurfs (i.e. people with high skill in assault with bonus armor. very nice)
3) third - any logic? the pilot on stock mechs in MWO is much more weak than any elite mech. Nobody not give you free Armor and AK-47 in CS:GO, if you play worse than enemies.

since this game about "skill" it don't have any sense.
if you rework hawken into mech simulator, it is still don't have any sense.
have no idea why people who play worse should just got advantages without putting any effort "trying to play better"
