Also cringing at every shot I miss. Uh.

But luckily that's not the point.

Thanks for the vid! As I'm learning more short range weapons and burst weapons this is really helpful!

Minor point, but "breaking" the turn cap would mean that you are exceeding it, which you are not. You are hitting the turn cap (or forcing your opponent to do so). Breaking it requires cheats.

I get what you're saying but it strikes me that the phrase "break the turn cap" has been applied in the sense that you are breaking your opponent's turn cap as well, i.e. breaking past their ability to turn with you.

It's a confusing issue of syntax to be sure, but I think both statements are in use.

I tend to call it turncapping or "giving em the run around" personally. Though I'm not sure that is any more clear to someone who is unfamiliar with the concept I think it as least not directly confusing or inaccurate.

Not really sure where "breaking the turn cap" came from as a phrase.

The phrase comes from the opponent's spirit being broken when you do it well

You briefly talked about a similar technique with Merl, but one of the most effective ways to break the cap and get behind someone is to move in a triangle with the sides being about the length of your dodge. It's more mechanically difficult than the maneuver you demonstrated, but it's also fundamentally more effective than circle-based strafing in burst classes once mastered. The main reason this always holds true is basic geometry: a triangle inscribed within any circle will always have a perimeter less than the circle's circumference. If you need to be a certain distance away from an enemy to avoid your splash while only firing intermittently, then it's much more efficient to move in a triangle. If you could boost sideways while also firing it'd be more efficient in mechs without splash to travel in the smallest possible circle around an enemy, but since that isn't possible a triangle is best.

I think it might've also been good to bring up 180+dodge as a way to counter people who broke your cap and got behind you. It mostly sees effective use in high-MMR Scout CQC, but it's useful to know even if it takes a lot of practice to get the timing down.

Oh, and these might be helpful for anyone wanting timings since there's a Nohboard overlay:
