Simple suggestion. Make an animated chat, voice chat, and do it all with avatars (which is still in development).
I think it would make the game more "atmospheric", as if you were talking with your teammates on the helmet/visor, or something like that.
I hope that the developers and so were going to do something like this, but the who knows what will be the new interface :D

well...

The placement of the tabs is questionable but i support the idea in general.

another two variants.
first with a different arrangement of tabs
Spoiler
second with no angle (deformation_) of tabs

Well, if the developers have made it possible to change the tab interface, you can configure as you comfortably

If i understand you right chat would be visible all the time_
it looks great, but not very comfortable then. If there was an option,  i would turn it off anyway. Teammate hp i can see just fine in game, and almost nobody types in chat during games.
But i like the position and looks of it better than in current chat, and if it would appear and disappear  with cool looking visual effects, then i got no problem with it

First option looks more aesthetically pleasing.

No, they come at a time when someone speaks into a microphone
If everyone is silent (dont speak), the screen will be blank. (imagine "dead space" aizek clark interface, remember how it had implemented the "voice transmittion" and "text diaries"_ I suggest something like that. When we see the speaker's face (in my version - his avatar))

The same applies to the chat (on the left)
after a while the first message disappears, then the second, etc. If no one writes, it also disappears

yep! it's right point of view ;)

within the framework of maintaining the appearance (design), I would suggest to choose an avatar from fifteen to twenty "pilots" proposed by developers.
Otherwise, it is likely that users will put myself all the small stuff instead of pilot face (or pilot helmet) (as on My Little Pony, funny cats, obscene stuff, and other fuzzy bunny)

This  reminded me of Starcraft2 avatars.
There everyone starts off with basic, default one. And later they unlock other unique ones,  from match win count and other things, and this would fit with hawken quite well,  missed opportunity so far.

I like it. Might be slightly intrusive, but the idea is great! :)

P.S. Also, your Photoshop skills are remarkable.

This would go perfectly with this addition, as well as the text and voice chat. It would also make it much easier to tell who is talking over their mic.

UT has a similar setup, where whenever someone taunts you, or gives an order, you see their character portrait in your HUD. It is nice, because it gives an easily identifiable visual indication of who is communicating with you.

Plus, most other sci-fi vehicles have video chat, and our mechs should to.

that's what I was guided when drawing it. In many movies/cartoons about mech connection is arranged in such a way. However, I do not remember the games where it would be implemented.

I really like this. Like you said, we would need custom avatars ingame avatars though. I wouldn't mind paying real cash for an ingame avatar though, if something like this was implemented.

I would suggest putting the pilots callsign next to their image. It could help you determine their position easier if they're calling or help, especially if multiple people on your team have the same icon.

Do you think the avatar should appear if someone uses the help requested or enemy sighted buttons too_

General that there should have been a callsign. just in the process of drawing I forgot to add it.
Maybe later I'll add a few more variants and at the same time add a callsign or experiment with the details and fonts. Yet imagine that there is a callsign =)

she is not bald, she had a "pony tail" hairstyle =)
just pics from internet, for example.
