Yes, because a single person can simultaneously play two games at once.
I wish I could do that.

It is highly doubtable that players would go online with multiple accounts at the same time.
Though, to answer your question, yes that number of 400 sounds about right.
This is why you have to spread the word about this awesome game! ;)

I usually never log through steam when playing Hawken. So maybe you can add... 10 more players to these figures.

I don't get the impression new people will show up just to receive a brutal smurfing.
I've never been all that good but now that its boiled down to the hardcore fans I can only hope that the I get put on the team with the pubstompers.

You havent took your medicines today, leave forums then.
Steam charts are not valid, because some players dont launch steam when they play hawken. Like me. In steam timers indicates like 12 hours of hawkening.
I jsut dont like bloat- and spy- ware running on my computer, you know.
Hawken playebase is a little bit older than in other games so i guess people are more aware of such things.
Edit: and its rare that game is capable of launching without steam running already.

The difference it would make is so minor that it is irrelevant. 400 or 500. It is still a poor number compared to the potential Hawken had.
Steam charts are a good way to find out how many players play a game on average. For specific numbers we can still look at Ashfire's stats but I am not sure what the source is ... if it is steam it wouldn't make a difference (obviously).
But see, the numbers don't differ that much. The average player has steam opened when playing Hawken.

Interesting thing about the Steam charts numbers.. it shows 446 people playing Hawken right now, but if you hop on over to the herokuapp site, it is showing only 277 people actually playing in a server right now. Between the two, I don't think the herokuapp site numbers requires Steam to be running to be counted, just that you actually be playing in a server, so the numbers don't get inflated by people leaving Hawken running at the main menu or login screen. But, I suppose people active in the garage and market screens won't be counted at the herokuapp site while they will at the steam charts site.

Number of players online is usually between 180-330. I have never seen 400 players in the last 4 months.
In EU, it is usually 80-160. It's still stellar compared to Oceania.
I blame this abysmal player count for that my gg/bg ratio is around 0.2 lately
Perhaps I'll check back later.
Devs, please find some tips in my signature on how to make Hawken a better game.

actually, if you see 400 players, and only 10 in fights, probably other 390 sit in their hangar and chatting with babaji, or experimenting with mechs internals. i suppose. in theory.

I, too, NEVER log into steam. It is just an extra step, and extra crap, that I have to do... and I like efficiency.
Considering that it was heavily discussed on the original Hawken forum that one need not go through Steam to play Hawken, or create an account, I imagine the number of people playing to always be at least twice what Steam shows.

It's because the fuzzy bunnyng devs don't add anything. Everyone in this forum give ideas out the butt of ways to improve the game. Plenty are bad but some are really fuzzy bunnyng easy ways to add fuzzy bunny. But no the devs are content to just let this game go to fuzzy bunny. "We need to fix all the glitches before we do anything!" as if adding a new skin every few weeks would just crash the game and render all the servers in active. I started playing Rust and have stuck with it even though it's riddled with bugs. Why? because their devs actually add new fuzzy bunny almost every week. I'm not asking that of hawken but holy crap just add a new map. Hell make a map contest with a cash prize instead of the fuzzy bunnyng tournaments. but whatever they pretty much assigned a dev to come on here read some of it and go "Lel add or change the game? no." So why is anyone surprised that after a while people are going to lose interest even if this was the greatest mech simulator/arena shooter ever. I give hawken 2 years and it will shut down if the devs don't add a mech or a map to this game.

one million people in whole world get some good ideas, but only ten people can do it right.
people are going to lose interest even if this was the greatest mech simulator/arena shooter ever.
q3 (and other) never change, and it is a one of the best arena-shooter ever. just because people love kill somone in duel...yeah, hawken need working duel mode. another good idea! pew!

and this is why it will die. I gave an example of Rust. Their Dev has only like 5-7 people and they are pumping fuzzy bunny out like crazy every week. This entire community is ignorant to the progress a good dev team can do when they concentrate on adding fuzzy bunnyng something. Also go ahead keep sucking off Hawken Devs as the best Arena shooter ever. It doesn't matter, you play the same damn game 10000 fuzzy bunnyng times it gets boring and you go off to some other "GREATEST GAME IN THIS SPECIFIC GENRE" leaving no one else to replace you. So please have fun. I am. I love this game but the fact is players can't say around if nothing is going to change. there are thousands of games out there and pretty soon that guy you are killing is going to decide "I'd like to play something else" and when he's done he's going to look at old Hawken on the steam play list sitting there collecting dust insisting that "running around in the same robots and maps is the greatesting thing on earth" and he is going to see that Killing Floor 2 is on sell!

How to launch without steam ?
Depends on where you configured STEAM to install your games, but generally:
RUN ==> Program Files (x86)\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Hawken\Binaries\Win32\HawkenGame-Win32-Shipping.exe

Right, because rust's devs totally got out in the middle of a game that they had never worked on and was badly optimised and BIG. Why don't you find some giant abandoned code project and immediately start pushing updates to it? You have no idea about how development works. I can barely read my own code after not looking at it for a few months, now imagine SOMEONE ELSE'S code that you've never seen before.

How about this?
I've taken a small Hawken break, been busy with work. I'm back on now. When it's bangin' with 2000+ players, I enjoy full servers, I enjoy the variety of skill levels and play styles, I enjoy getting my ass kicked. (Not really.)
When it's slow, I work with good or better teammates, I enjoy pounding noobs into the ground. I work with it.
This game is great, and it's in development even more. If you don't think this is the best mech shooter out there, go play MechWarriorSloMo, and feel like you're driving an asphalt spreader.
Frankly, I'm excited about all the changes and we should thank Capn'Josh and his crew for their excellent work. So, let's enjoy this game, work on our skills, and quit whining, or else I'll send you a Candy Crush invite.
