Well I'll be. I've played with or against your alt quite a lot and don't recognize your main.

Alt: ActionBastard. I use this one for extremely inebriated play, and trying out new stuff/mechs I don't really like to play normally, or trying to play on EU servers.

I also sometimes use my wife's account that she never uses anymore (She ended up not liking HAWKEN very much, to my great dismay & eternal sadness): MadamSatan. I use this one for kicks, but rarely.

I have a 2nd alt that I will never, ever divulge (unless you come to my house and get me drunk.); It only has, and will ever have, 2 mechs: Assault, and Raider. It's only friend is Scrimbot. I use this one for actual anonymity. But rarely.

(I use the term "Alt," because all of my accounts are roughly the same or close enough to the MMR of my main; That said, I do not use any of my alts as often as my main; Not that I really use my main anymore, either. I haven't actually played HAWKEN in awhile, and don't plan to again for awhile yet.)

AFAIK smurfs have a (much) lower MMR than the main account; alt accounts don't.

 

 

Edit: assuming a player uses the same mechs and playstyles on all accounts.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the mmr is pretty much the same between alt and main. In my mind what separates an alt from a smurf is level 30 (ergo no more underdog bonus) and a consistent mmr. For me, my alt has an mmr range ~300 lower than my main, because of how and when I play it. But, it stays pretty consistently within that range.

I think of it this way: all accounts that aren't the original primary account start out as smurfs. As a smurf's MMR matures and approaches the MMR of the primary account, it becomes an alternate account.

 

Put another way: if matchmaking places you in the same position with your smurf account as it does with your primary, then your smurf account has successfully evolved into an alt account.

Derp I meant lvl 30.

 

I use that definition because an a lot of people use their alts to play in.... altered states, therefore meaning a different, but consistent, mmr.

Interesting point. To ensure consistency, let's assume we're talking about a player who has a smurf account exclusively (1) to play mechs that they are terrible at, or (2) plays with a different style that puts them at some sort of disadvantage from their normal playstyle. To add some more context, let's say that the player's primary account is 2200 MMR, and the other account that they have (and which they exclusively play mechs they're bad at) is at 2000 MMR and hasn't increased for some time. With all that in mind, I think the argument can be made one of two ways:

 

1. The 2000 MMR account is now an alt, even though the MMR difference between the two accounts is sufficient for matchmaker to place each account in matches in different ways (a criteria that I think separates smurfs from alts). This is because that player isn't gaining an advantage when he plays at a 2000 MMR level on a 2000 MMR account. On the other hand...

 

2. The 2000 MMR account is still a smurf because there's the potential for the 2200 MMR pilot to get bored playing at a 2000 MMR level and instead decides it's time to whip some fuzzy bunny(at a 2200 MMR level).

 

This is all assuming that MMR is an accurate indicator of player skill. I'm not saying either way because that's a long discussion and I lack the expertise to speak intelligently on the topic.

thanks for the warm clicks on my post, friends.  i may have a mech disfunction of some kind, but i don't think it's been diagnosed. heh.

actually, all told, i have nearly 40 accounts, probably around 4000 hours and around 200 mechs among them, if you discount the duplicate Freds and 'Salts. (plus the Zerks and SS dups from pre-Asc)

it seems every time i deposit cash into the game (i promised 10-20 USD every month, as even most subscript games aren't this good), and gotta splay in on something new. pretty colors, spiffy bling, and rokketzz.

I  hereby  petition to call any alternate account having proportionate MMR to play level an 'alternate account ', as the term 'smurf' is generally used to imply a player engaging outside of his/her appropriate skill range.

Also how the heck did Amid color his text with a gradient? Bright colors aren't annoying enough.

 

Surely you could nitpick continuously, but it seems conclusive enough to say that an account is only a smurf if the MMR attached is disproportionate to the actual average skill level of the player; that is to say, the algorithm has not had sufficient time to evaluate and apply an accurate MMR to the account.

E.g. whether your alt is for playing drunk, practicing bad mechs, or generally caring less about your performance, I'd call it an alternate account. Even if you think the account's MMR is inconsistent and may play at a higher level sometimes, the fact is the account's MMR is relatively settled- just, yes, we can agree alt accounts will inherently have more variation in their play level.
