There are a few mechs on the console (and soon to be PC) that don't have names apart from their chassis designations. I wanted to start compiling names that could possibly end up being the names for the mechs.

In no particular order...

Ord could be called Gunslinger, considering that was the inspiration behind it.

What the fuzz. What the actual fuzz. DallasCreeper making a fun and useful thread? It's the end if days.

Now that I'm done clutching my pearls...

Nief: Nephilim, Ace, Drifter, Archer (LAWSUIT INCOMING)
Charge: Charger, Cavalier, Boxer
36M: I like Sentry. But I'd rather have the whole thing scrapped and started afresh with a whole new schtick.
Vytro: Caster, Magician, Mountebank. I like Stalker because the thing is literally designed, down to the lore, as a ripoff of the Predator. That's literally what the corporation that designed it was looking for.
Ord: Marshall, Pistoleer, Sheriff
Civ: delete this phenomenal POS

I like "Suppressor" for 36M, but only because "we learned absolutely nothing from play testing" is probably too long and "definitely not Bastion" probably wouldn't go over well.

Charge to Charger is easy and it fits well.

Honestly though if they want to standardize it might be easier for them to rename the old mechs after their chassis (scout = moke, pred = patrik, raider = muller, etc) and it might be easier to name future mechs based on that convention, as they are simply invented syllables instead of descriptors.

The issue that I find with this naming convention is that the chassis designations don't tell players what these mechs' roles on the battlefield are. It's a lot clearer to a new player what an Assault does instead of a "Brommens". It's more simple for the devs, sure, but I think sticking with the current system would be better, at least for clarity's sake.

I did not know that.

It would be nice if the mech name reflected its play style, yes, but I don't think that is something worth chasing for two reasons. First, you will never quite get it right. I would argue that Berserker and Raider should switch names, Reaper could be anything, Predator and Infiltrator are interchangeably descriptive, and assault, brawler, and bruiser pretty much mean the same thing.

Second, what other class based shooter (or any other type of game) uses descriptive names? All the class based games I can think of (even mobas) rely primarily on the appearance of the character or class to communicate what it plays like. You know Reinhardt is a tank because he's 8 feet tall and wearing a suit of armor. You know Caitlyn is a long range glass cannon because she's scrawny and carrying a sniper rifle. You know a Catapult is a missile platform because, other than legs and a cockpit, the entire mech is made of missile racks.

What this says to me is that the name doesn't really need to be descriptive so long as the visuals are coherent with the game design.

What this says to me is that the name doesn't really need to be descriptive so long as the visuals are coherent with the game design.

But they (the visuals) aren't coherent, in HOWKEN; everything has a weird (albeit cool) design that doesn't really signify anything, aside from some small details here and there. A lot of the weapons don't even look like anything in particular.

Therefore more descriptive names might be a better choice for HOWKEN.

Again... And again... And again... Either come up with new names for the new mechs, that are reminiscent of the pre-RLD names, or change ALL the names to just the chassis names. Using both conventions is tacky. One or the other, fuzzy bunny. I honestly don't care which method they use, I'm fine with all chassis names even, just fuzzy bunnyng pick one goddamnit.

As far as new names go, I really only have one suggestion:
Vytro -> Disruptor

I disagree. Big mechs are slow and have a lot of health, little mechs are fast and have less health. Short fat weapons (think flak, miniflak, t32) are close range weapons while long skinny weapons (slug, sabot, SA hawkins) are long range. Hellfires are very obviously a missile launcher. Tow launcher is clearly a bazooka. Heat cannon is decidedly cannon-like in appearance. Vulcan is very obviously a high DPS minigun type thing.

Obviously Breacher, EOCR, and maybe Seeker are a good deal less obvious, but for the most part I think the visuals in Hawken are about as communicative as they can be considering how amorphous the roles of each mech are.

I did have some stuff here, but I don't think it made enough sense to be a legitimate argument.

"Renegade" > on an a mech that is designed for flanking/ambushing.
perhaps an A with the lurking grenade secondary asset and heat/t32/eoc (would like to see a more bursty+frontloaded version of the PN..., eg close-mid range burst weaps) and ability to stay off radar (silencer) for short duration 2-3 sec when shooting?

1. a person who deserts a party or cause for another.
2. An outlaw; a rebel.
3. an individual who rejects lawful or conventional behaviour
4. noun use of past participle of renegare "deny"

Not necessarily a suggestion for an existing mech. just pin it for future.
also I'd prefer to see the name charger on a mech with chargeable weapons rather than just on a chassis called charge.
