Hate to give a short and simple answer to a thoughtfully-constructed post, but I'm tired:

  1. IIRC, the last Try-Hard Cup had 8-minute rounds.
  2. During our shoutcast, very few teams seemed pressed for time.  Additionally, 8 minutes provided (imo) ample engagement opportunities.
  3. If we ran anything (much) beyond 8-minute rounds, our 3v3 Cups would take forever.  Remember that they're playing a best-of-three format.

Were you able to watch any matches from the previous tournament?  If not, you might want to give our shoutcasted recordings a look: https://community.pl...-cup-concludes/

Had quite a few matches reach our tiebreaker maps.  Would recommend the Nudisto Beach vs Wobbling Wimp Wibblers games especially - very close throughout.

You're already running effectively 10 minute rounds because the clock starts at 8 minutes on a countdown. I'm not entirely sure why they're not just 10 minutes with the understanding that people need their fuzzy bunny together.

Shoutcasters will use the 2 minutes to accurately describe the degree of rekt, mock the players who need to take selfies, and how each individual player makes them feel.

Players will use the 2 minutes for pre-game rituals, battle hakas, and to decide amongst themselves whether to throw for the payoff.

At this point I've played in all but (I think) one of the 3v3 cups, and have yet to feel that the matches were too short.

Plus, the last one we did took like 8 hours. For MWB playing without a bye-round all the way to the losers bracket final that turned out to be a bit grueling even with only one of our matches going to 3 rounds. I can see doing longer rounds for a full on league, but in a cup like this quantity is quality.

I expect teams to show up with a choreographed dance routine battle haka.

Good luck to all participants!

The 1pm start time will keep me out of this Cup (travellin').  Hopefully my schedule will cooperate with the March tourney.

Thanks again to the organizers for sacrificing their time to put these events together.

Update:

LEAGUE FORMAT: This cup will follow the Swiss-system formatThis is a no-elimination system that will shorten the cup's total length considerably, while allowing for every team to play the same amount of matches (or nearly so).  Additionally, teams will find themselves matched against similarly-skilled teams as the tournament progresses. Each match is still best two out of three.

I like this.

I also like the mention of the Konrad system in that wiki, which might be useful towards solving some of TPG's scheduling problems, if the admins are willing to consider it.

The problem with match scheduling isn't tpg, its hawken players.

I can count on one hand how many matches I saw played at a time/day other than on match night at 9pm east in 10 years of tpg.

Then came hawken.

Actually Nighthawk00 won't make it for the tournament so me and Robscancer left to create another one with Amid. UTN will sit this one down because it's not the unexpected trio of nonames if a member can't make it.

Good tournament, lots of fun!

I felt that the Swiss-System worked really well; it allowed for everyone to play at least a few matches, and allowed for some of the scrubbier teams to actually face each other at some point, resulting in some awesome close matches. Would recommend for future tournaments.

I'm curious to hear from the Automoms what they thought of the cup, in particular if there's anything in play style that struck you as hugely different between regions.

Also another vote for Swiss-System. I think it worked quite well.

NA players, on the average, seem to be more pushy and willing to engage. That can be punished under normal circumstances, but not when your ping is 180. Another thing that struck me is some teams waiting for us to pick, to then counterpick. Like, come one guys.

Other than that, the event was really fun and well-organized. Too bad today most private servers will disappear.

I liked the format. Having no radar placed more importance on communication and gave a better window for engaging. The D9's being cool with our momentary 3 C's (due to my brainfart Rockie spawn) was much appreciated. Overall it was gg's and there were good moments. Totally worth ruining the night's sleep.  :pirate:

Ah, didn't catch the drift.

Yeah, case in point: the early, and quite frankly shocking, lead RAL pulled over our 2/3rds of our milge opponents would have been better served by spending the next 7 minutes running screaming away from any engagement and would probably have netted us a win on at least one occasion.

But I didn't come to win, I came to play against the best, and after checking with the team, we elected to continue to duke it out.
