So i just got a new laptop, and I wanted to play hawken on it, i updated all of my software and got drivers, and the game ran fine. Just today i try to launch hawken and I get the error message "Failed to create the D3D9 Device! This can happen if the desktop is locked. Exiting..." I've looked around on the forums (yes i used the search bar) and saw some people with a similar issue and none of the fixes seem to work.

Laptop Specs

Processor: Intel Core i7-4720HQ 2.6 GHz

Memory:12 GB DDR3L

GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M

Video Memory: 2 GB GDDR5

Here Is the link to the computer

On a side note, Dayz also wont run but has a different error

Edit: all steam games dont seem to be working, all with completley different error messages. Including CS:GO

I do appreciate the art, but I don't have time to find anything good. /h/

What appears to be happening is that your games are not properly reading your desktop's native resolution. No idea how to fix the core issue, but the easiest workaround appending the game's launch options:

Right click the game in your library -> properties -> set launch options -> -windowed

Then change your ingame resolution to match your desktop's. Remove the -windowed launch option afterwards.

Still doesn't fix the reason why it's happening but that's for you to google. I assume it's some issue with the fuzzy bunny MSI ladles on top of Windows, or something with GeForce Experience.

Well, I assume you tried to edit the config file HawkenSystemSettings manually.

I'd take a look at all the stuff nvidia and MSI jammed on your laptop and start stripping out things one by one and rolling back drivers. So long as you have an Nvidia installer you should be able to reinstall the important fuzzy bunny (i.e. drivers).

Did you try to reset your ini's?  Pretty sure you corrupted one, either by mistake or Hawken did it on its own.  It happens by itself every once in a while, I dunno what causes it.  Its also entirely possible you edited something you weren't supposed to and the thing it was looking for doesn't exist due to the missing letter(s).

Its happened to me a few times when I accidently hit backspace and the cursor wasn't where I thought it was, luckily I keep a few backups and a quick diff of the files, showed the missing letter.

Delete inis and reinstall the DirectX and VC++ libraries or distributables.
